Join us for the first ever Canine Assisted Therapy Doggie FLASH MOB! This event is to raise awareness for Canine Assisted Therapy and all therapy dogs. It is also to make people aware of the potential that rescues have to give back to the community by becoming therapy dogs.

Organized by Canine Assisted Therapy in association with Alpha Dog Academy and Star Dog Obedience.

Who can participate?:

Any handler with a dog that is people friendly and dog friendly and is trained using positive reinforcement.

To get started:

Then, join us for group practices:

Locations, dates and times for the practices will be announced but you must RSVP.

If you plan to participate, RSVP to:

RSVPs are important to get a head count and to contact you with more details.

Additional Info:

All dogs must be ON LEASH. Leashes should be no more than 6 feet long. NO PRONG COLLARS OR RETRACTABLE LEASHES ALLOWED! Dogs on retractable leashes or with prong collars will not be allowed to participate.
By participating in this event, you agree that your dog is your responsibility. Canine Assisted Therapy, Alpha Dog Academy and Star Dog Training will not be held liable for anyone else's actions.

There will be many dogs present so you will want to bring the "high value" treats (if you need them) to keep your dog interested in you. High value treats are things like freeze dried liver and hot dogs.
Our goal is to show that rescues are capable of becoming therapy dogs and giving back to the community and to raise awareness for C.A.T. Please wear a PURPLE shirt or jacket. If your dog is a therapy dog with C.A.T. or another organization, please be sure the dog wears their organization's vest or bandana. If your dog is a rescue, we will provide a sign for your dog that says, "Someone took a chance on me."

DANCE INSTRUCTIONS:

Steps:

When the music starts, begin walking single file leaving plenty of room between you and the team in front of you. We will form a large "oval". There will be a verbal cue to start the count at step 1.

All moves are done to an 8 count.

1. WALK FORWARD - 2,3,4,5,6,7,8

2. WALK FORWARD- 2,3,4,5,6,7,8

3. STOP, TURN LEFT TO FACE CENTER, SIT - Step in front of your dog so you face him/her. (Dogs should be facing the center of the oval and your back should be to the inside of the oval.)

4. STAY - Walk around dog to the LEFT - CLOCKWISE

5. SHAKE - Right

6. SHAKE - Left

7. STAY - Walk around your dog to the RIGHT - COUNTER-CLOCKWISE stopping when your dog is on your left in the heal position. Turn to face right and begin to walk forward starting again with step 1.

End the dance by doing showing your own tricks. The important part of the Doggy Flash Mob is to HAVE FUN!

The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) is hosting a FREE eye exam event during the month of May 2011.
Over 190 ACVO board certified veterinary ophthalmologists will donate their services to provide eye examinations to registered Service Animals and Certified Therapy Dogs across America. Best of all - at no cost. It is anticipated that through these efforts Service Dog health can be improved and potential disease averted for thousands of animals.

The photo shoot is free to C.A.T. Members, $10.00 to Non C.A.T. Members and is by appointment only. We will need your dogs up to date rabies and bordatella information prior to your dog entering the building. It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Earl, Certified C.A.T. Dog, crossed over Rainbow Bridge. Earl was a wonderful and fun loving dog that brought a tremendous amount of joy to everyone that he met. Earl encouraged laughter and fun when he entered a room. His favorite thing to do was to sit on the sofa, legs crossed, and socialize with the residents of the facilities that he visited.

Earl will be sorely missed and our heart goes out to his owners Helene and Sharon.

You are your pet's first responder!

According to the American Animal Hospital Association 25% more pets would survive if just one first aid technique was applied prior to receiving emergency veterinary care.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the most important first aid technique that every pet owner should be comfortable with. Chances are that you will never have to use it, but it will save your pet's life if a foreign object gets lodged in his airway.

Canine Assisted Therapy and Dr. Rudd Nelson, DVM have been providing pet first aid and CPR seminars for the past year. To date, there have been 5 animals saved because the owners attended one of these classes. We were fortunate enough to hear first hand a very touching story about Magnolia who was saved because her owner attended our C.A.T. pet first aid and CPR course. It is our pleasure to share this wonderful story with you. We hope that it will help everyone understand the importance of learning pet first aid and CPR.

Here are some great tips for bringing your pet on your trip so that everyone will have a safe and happy trip.

Canine Assisted Therapy...Celebrating Our 1st Year

It's hard to believe that on August 10th, it will be a year since the incorporation of Canine Assisted Therapy.

Our Mission: To provide a network of qualified, dependable, caring Therapy Teams committed to delivering a therapeutic benefit through the use of dogs to both children and adults who need comfort, companionship, or the unconditional love that only a dog can provide. To provide support, training, education and mentoring to those interested in dog therapy programs. To build connections between volunteers, facilities and individuals seeking dog therapy.

We have been truly blessed by wonderful volunteers and supporters who are helping C.A.T. to fulfill this mission. Because of these wonderful volunteers and supporters, our services have expanded beyond what we first envisioned.

C.A.T. volunteers not only provide the love and affection of their dogs to those in nursing homes, hospitals and assisted living facilities, but are going forth and providing other much needed services with their dogs.

Some of our current and future services include:

Continuing Education: To make Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) and Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) a great experience for those we serve and for the volunteers, education of our volunteers is key. We have been fortunate enough to have Laura A. Weber, M.S., LMHC to head up this wonderful program which we began in December of last year. Those who have attended the seminars have come away with a better understanding of such issues as: Mental Illness; Working With Special Populations; Infection Control in Facilities; Alzheimer's and Dementia. These are just a few of the informative seminars. By having a better understanding of populations that we serve, our volunteers are much more prepared to provide the quality service that they have quickly become known for.

The Senior Corps: Senior Corps was created to involve the residents of assisted living facilities. Many of these individuals are unable to travel outside of their residence, so C.A.T. brings the volunteering opportunity to them. The seniors assist in the new C.A.T. dog candidate evaluations by providing their participation with wheelchairs and walkers to insure that the dogs are comfortable around these devices. They also help by putting together packages for special projects and events held by C.A.T. The Senior Corps has provided an opportunity for those confined in assisted living, to experience the wonderful feeling of being able to give back to the community.

Teen Corps: The Teen Corps is currently in Oxford, Florida and is led by Susan McCauley. Teens and their dogs work together with Susan to prepare for the AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluation with the goal of becoming a Certified C.A.T. Dog team. The teens then visit nursing homes in the area with their Certified C.A.T. Dogs. This program not only teaches the teens responsibility and creates a stronger bond with their pets, but enables them to give back to the community and fulfill their community service hour requirement.

Pack Readers Program: One of the most exciting opportunities for C.A.T. volunteers is participating in this program. Advanced Certified C.A.T. Dogs are accompanied by their handlers into schools to help children with their reading skills. Little did we know that the dogs not only serve to help children with reading, but with social skills and self-confidence as well. C.A.T. understands the importance of having knowledgeable volunteers working with the children so we are currently putting the finishing touches on a volunteer training program specifically for those participating in this opportunity.

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT): Beginning this month, many of our Advanced C.A.T. Dog Teams will be participating in Physical Therapy programs with the disabled. The dogs will be an important part of the program by performing tasks such as walking alongside a wheel chair or walker, fetching a ball, allowing participants to assist with grooming activities, and many other activities. We all know how much more fun the most mundane activities are if you do them in the company of a dog.

A very special thank you to all of our volunteers and donors who have helped to make this possible. We can't wait to see what the future will hold for C.A.T. and its wonderful volunteers.
